Southern Yellow Pine

southern yellow pine

Cost Savings
Southern Yellow Pine is competitively priced because of abundant timber supply, manufacturing expertise, and established market preference. This means that by choosing Southern Yellow Pine you can reduce the amount of timber required, resulting in significant cost savings.

Superior Strength and Stiffness
Southern Yellow Pine is reputed to be the strongest softwood structural timber species. Design values for Southern Yellow Pine are the highest of all commonly used wood species.

Highest Density
Southern Yellow Pine also has the highest density of all structural lumber species, providing superior fastener holding power and load-bearing capacity.

Ideal To Treat
Southern Yellow Pine has long been the preferred species for pressure treatment because of its unique cellular structure that permits deep, uniform penetration of preservatives. Some 85% of all pressure-treated wood produced in the U.S. is Southern Yellow Pine.

Natural Beauty
Southern Yellow Pine offers a distinct grain pattern and an appealing golden colour. Because of this natural beauty, exposed Southern Yellow Pine provides architectural appeal.

Widespread Availability
Southern Yellow Pine is an abundant and renewable resource, growing in a vast band across the Southern United States from East Texas to Virginia. Nearly 400 manufacturers produce Southern Yellow Pine lumber, making it readily available.

Dimensional Stability
Southern Yellow Pine dimension timber 2" and less in thickness must be dried to a maximum moisture content of 19%. This minimizes shrinkage associated with green lumber and provides long-term stability.

CLEAR DOUGLAS FIR

DOUGLAS FIR

FSC logo

Please note if FSC/PEFC certified wood is required
please specify at time of placing an order.

Douglas Fir is best known for its tough fibre, dense grain structure and strength. Appreciated by designers and architects alike it has a rich visual quality that responds to fine craftsmanship and finishing.

Attractive Grain and Colour
Douglas Fir has a light, rose colour, which darkens over time when exposed to UV rays. When sawn, its vertical grain it is particularly attractive and has a remarkably straight grain pattern. The type and quantity, grain pattern, colour, texture and knot size; as well as quality of manufacturing all determine the grade, with each grade having its own characteristics.
Moisture content levels are carefully controlled in the highest grades to ensure products will meet the strict dimensional stability requirements of furniture manufacturers and cabinet makers.

Exceptional Finish
Douglas Fir machines to an exceptionally smooth, glossy finish and when dry it retains its shape and size without shrinking, swelling, cupping, warping, bowing or twisting, and generally won’t show a raised grain.
Clear coatings, transparent lacquer, varnishes, oils, wax, bright or subdued stains, tints or paints and enamels are all appropriate finishes.

CHARACTERISTICS OF DOUGLAS FIR

Density 530kg/M³
Durability: Rated as moderately resistant to decay. Needs proper and adequate protection.
Finishing: Paints, stains and varnishes all work well
Workability: Easy to cut, saw, plane, nail, turn and glue.
Works readily with hand and power tools.
Moulding qualities very good.
Resistance to Abrasion: Good, works well in areas where hardness is a factor.
Hardness: Medium

Uses
These characteristics make Douglas fir ideal for all types of joinery applications including fascia, doors, millwork, window and door casings, mantels, stairs and baseboards. Although most softwoods are not suitable for flooring Douglas Fir will hold a finish, remain level, resist scuffing and cracking and maintain its appearance under extreme wear.
The higher grades of Douglas Fir, as stocked by Illingworth Ingham (M/cr) Ltd, are quite refined with sound, tight knots making it suitable for shelving, cladding and panelling. It is dimensionally stable and recognised for its strength–to-weight ratio. Its high specific gravity provides superb nail and plate-holding ability.

WESTERN RED CEDAR

WESTERN RED CEDAR
Softwood WESTERN RED CEDAR

Insulation Properties

Western Red Cedar heartwood is renowned for its high decay-resistance and its good insulation properties, far superior to brick, concrete and steel. Therefore structures built from Western Red Cedar will be cooler in summer and warmer in winter. It has very good weathering characteristics which makes it popular for exterior applications.

Density
It has a low wood density and low shrinkage factor which means it is unlikely to warp or twist. Western Red Cedar also has an ability to dampen vibrations, making it effective in reducing or confining noise and therefore good for panelling and moulding.

Flame Spreading Rate
Western Red Cedar’s flame spreading rate and smoke developed classification is considerably below the maximum limits set by most building codes.

Great Finishing Properties
The lack of pitch or resinous extractives contributes to its good finishing properties which means it can take a variety of coatings, paints and stains exceptionally well, provided it is dried and properly primed, all of which can be undertaken by Illingworth Ingham.

Working Properties
Western Red Cedar is one of the easiest timbers to work with because of its straight grain and uniform texture. It planes and sands clearly; is easy to saw, nail and glues well with a range of adhesives. It machines well too.

COLOUR
When freshly machined Clear Western Red Cedar seems to vary from a; light straw colour to a dark red/brown, but the colour becomes more uniform in natural light. It is much sought after for its “weathered” appearance. The grain is typically straight and even.

DURABILITY
Western Red Cedar is reported to have a very high natural resistance to decay. Reported to perform well when in contact with the ground, although the mild UK winters are the exception as they promote decay.

GRADES
Illingworth Ingham are able to offer clear grade Western Red Cedar which are supplied with a smooth finish and is suitable where a more formal appearance is required. Illingworth Ingham can offer a wide variety of patterns for panelling and mouldings or we can custom produce to your requirements.

HEMLOCK – AN EXCELLENT, STABLE, LOW PRICED TIMBER

clear softwood maybee hemlock

Hemlock is a North American species that is commonly used for a range of general joinery purposes including beams, flooring, exterior trims and sidings, furniture, joists, panelling, parquet floors and cabinet making.

Colour and Grain
The heartwood is white to yellow brown with the sapwood paler than the heartwood but often unable to be differentiated. Hemlock generally has a straight and even grain with clear growth rings and a fine texture. It has a lustrous finish but is non-durable unless treated.

Drying Characteristics
It Kiln dries slowly because of its high moisture content, but seasons well. Hemlock can be air-seasoned or kiln dried to minimise degradation. Drying defects may occur including uneven moisture content, warping and chemical stains. Ease of drying is moderate. It should be resin free and odourless when properly dried. It should have a high dimensional stability when properly dried.
All Illingworth Ingham’s Hemlock is kiln-dried.

Very Good Finishing Qualities
Hemlock’s general finishing qualities are good, provided it is properly dried. It can be painted, stained, varnished and polished all with good results.

Workability
Hemlock has good nail holding properties and has very good resistance to splitting when nailed. It also has very good screwing properties and a good screw holding ability. It can be glued with ease too.

Machinability
It is very easy to machine and mould and planes to a good finish. Surfaces may scratch or dent however, due to the softness of the wood. It is a moderate weight.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HEMLOCK
Density:     700 - 750 kg/m3
Durability: Very little resistance to decay so needs proper and adequate protection.
Stability:    High dimensional stability. Highly rated for its stability under different moisture conditions.

SIBERIAN LARCH - THE IDEAL TIMBER FOR CLADDING

SIBERIAN LARCH

Siberian Larch Uses
Siberian Larch is commonly used for cladding and joinery. In fact it has been used in construction for centuries and in Russia it is quite common to find buildings constructed from Larch dating back over 800 years.
It is ideal for exposed elevations or where there are likely to be knocks or scrapes as it is very hardwearing. Timber cladding is an attractive and economical way to finish the exterior of both new and old buildings and is growing in popularity due to the contemporary feel that it creates. Importantly, it also provides a hardwearing, protective layer against the elements, and it is an excellent insulator.
Siberian Larch is also growing in popularity for floors, windows, doorframes and furniture.

Colour and Grain
Siberian Larch has a pale yellow-orange/brown colour with a strong grain pattern. Due to the fact that the trees are slow growing in the extreme climate the result is tight growth rings and a fine grain.

Impressive Dimensional Stability
This characteristic means that it has a low cost of installation and is low maintenance

Natural Resistance to Decay
Siberian Larch has a naturally high density which makes it more difficult for decaying organisms to penetrate the wood. The harsh Siberian climate means that Siberian Larch has a very high percentage of latewood (over 75%) and a very tight grain. This late wood is denser and stronger than early wood which means it is much more durable. The density means that it is difficult for water and fungi to penetrate the wood, making it naturally resistant to decay. It also has a high resin content which further enhances its resistance to decay and rot, surpassing Oak, Ash and Pine.

One of the Toughest and Most Durable Softwoods in the World
Siberian Larch is very resinous and extremely hard. It is important to distinguish Siberian Larch from European Larch which is less durable & of a lower quality.

Workability
Unlike British Larch the knots in Siberian Larch are light in colour and less likely to fall out after drying and machining.
Siberian Larch can be sawn, drilled, machined or sanded without any problem. As it is a naturally beautiful wood very little finishing is required. For indoor applications it should be kiln dried.

ILLLINGWORTH INGHAM (M/CR) Stock Availability1" X 6" ONLY
