Hard Maple

Unlike most other hardwoods, the sapwood of Hard Maple is most commonly used rather than its heartwood. You would want to choose Hard Maple for applications where hardness and strength are important, although it is not suitable for exterior joinery.

Uses

Heavy use flooring, furniture, panelling, sports goods, musical instruments, kitchen cabinets, worktops, tabletops, interior joinery, stairs, handrails, mouldings and doors

Appearance

Colour – Creamy white with a pale reddish brown tinge

Grain – Straight, occasionally wavy or curly

Texture – Fine and even

Characteristics

Strength – Good strength properties.

Weight – 650 kg/m³.

Ease Of Drying – dries slowly with high shrinkage

Movement In Service – Small.

Preservative Treatment – Moderate

Working Properties

Sawing – Excellent

Planing – Good

Drilling – Good

Boring – Excellent

Turning – Excellent

Carving – Good

Moulding – Good

Nailing – Fair

Screwing – Fair

Gluing – Good

Finishing

Staining – Can produce an outstanding finish

Polishing – Polishes well and is suitable for enamel finishes and brown tones
